So,What is an Ichthus?
(Ikh-thoos) (Ikh-thus)
This symbol for
Christianity is not as well understood as the cross, but is still full
of meaning. For a full tutorial, check out this page called The History of the Ichthus.
For early Christians, persecution, i.e. being put to death, was a
very real threat. This symbol allowed them to identify themselves
to fellow believers. It was typically two arcs, drawn in the
sand, one by each person. Today it is a way to identify oneself
as a Christian and can be found on everything from vehicles to business
signs.
Ichthus or ichthys is the Greek word which simply means fish. The Greek spelling for fish is Iota, Chi Theta, Upsilon and Sigma. The five Greek letters are an acronym, Iesous, Christos, Theou, Uios, Soter, which means, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
Since Christians are to be "fishers of men"..., well you get the picture.
An alternative to the fish is this wagon
wheel style of ichthus made by
combining all the Greek letters,
.
The stone in this picture is from
Ephesus in Turkey
(remember Ephesians?)
and it is an example of another form of identification.
Now for the good news.
When God created man he designed a
special place in our hearts that is reserved for Him. Nothing
else can fill it. Not money, things, activities or anyone else.
Only God.
One of the biggest mysteries in our world today seems to be why we all have a hole inside us that nothing (and no one) else can fill? Look no further. Mystery solved!
God longs to know you and fill your heart! It's our purpose in life. He wants to
reside in you!
If you don't have a relationship with Him, do this. Ask Him to
reveal Himself to you. He is waiting for you. Tell Him that
you desire to know Him.
Ask for His forgiveness for what you have done that is outside of
His
will. (That is also called 'sin', but anything we do that is
outside of His will is sin and none of us are exempt from it).
Accept His son, as your sacrifice and make Him the Lord of your
life. It's free!
John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one
and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life."
In vs.18 it continues to say, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him."
God knows everything about you and me. He loves us anyway!
Get a Bible and read the book of John. It's God's love
letter to us!
