"Captive Box"
by
Tom Tunget
This box was made in
response to a challenge from other wood turners.
It is suspended in the 'captive ring' which the legs are attached to.
The lip below the ring prevents it from being lifted off the base. It
has the illusion of being two pieces, which it is but the
only
part that is actually removable is the lid!
The top finial, legs and base are made from Olive. The box body,
ring and lid are made from the same piece of Acacia. It is finished in Polyurethane.
The final product came out quite different than my concept drawings.
That is evidence, to me at least, that I am allowing the wood to
best represent itself!
This piece is in the collection of Ron Adams Jr.

The parameters for this challenge were to turn a lidded form (box, bottle, urn, etc.) that has a main diameter of at
least 3" and no more than 4". The form must be elevated at least 1" by a second
component (pedestal, legs, etc.) and has a finial comprised of a third separate
component. The overall piece should be between 6"- 8" tall. You must use at
least 2 different materials (wood, bone, inlace, etc) to complete the project.
